Chad Buck
Constructivist painter Chad Buck explores the textural properties of various media. His paintings and silverpoints embrace a powerful minimalist aesthetic that offer the viewer a transcendent experience. Silverpoint is the art of drawing with a finely made stylus of pure silver that creates a very indelible line on a prepared surface. The silver oxidizes into a handsome patina that traces the history of the line.  |
Buck’s work relies on the form that a mixture of metals, ground marble, pigment and oil alkyd take when applied to a two-dimensional linen surface resulting in an abstraction. His formal compositions are less about the paintings and more about the alchemy of the materials he uses. Each piece is a kind of performance given by complex patterns and materials while offering viewers an opportunity to be stilled, peaceful and contemplative, to observe the matrix of lines, to witness the language of paint and to experience new forms and perspective inherent in Buck’s surfaces. Buck divides his time between Puerto Vallarta and Oakland. His achievements as an artist include the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, a California State Art Fellowship, a WESTAF/NEA Fellowship in Drawing, a Mary Skaggs Printmaking Fellowship and numerous other awards. His work is part of both individual and corporate collections across the globe, including Pan Pacific Corporation in Yokohama, ITT in Brussels, Adriatico Square in Manila and AT&T, American Express, MGM, the Four Seasons and Hewlett-Packard in the U.S. Chad Buck’s work is appreciated by collectors in Los Angeles; San Francisco; Oakland, Portland, Oregon; New York City; Chicago; Salt Lake City; Jakarta, Singapore and many cities in Mexico. His career includes collaborative publications on printmaking with the Tokyo Art Museum, Foyer International D’accueil de Paris, the California Society of Printmakers in California and other artistic and educational institutions.
